“Kay’s Garden,” in Santa Fe, NM was designed for an octogenarian couple who could no longer use their gravel- and weed-filled back garden because of limited mobility. A smooth, colored concrete path, wide enough for the couple to walk side by side, winds its way through the garden and around a beloved apple tree. Three large honey locust trees afford shade along the path, and sculptural mossrock boulders serve as ephemeral water features and bird baths. The boulders and a wide variety of drought-tolerant and native plants offer 4-season interest (even in Santa Fe’s snowy winters), wildlife habitat and delight for the senses.
